Absolutely amazing pictures, that go to disprove my theory that the mothering instinct is essentially a selfish instinct. No don't get me wrong, I absolutely appreciate mothers and everything they do for us. But somewhere deep down, I think we are pre-conditioned to take care of our young because of the need for our genes to survive.

But these photographs of this animal in the wild, have just proven me wrong. As my MIL says, "the world is essentially a good place". On that note, Happy Diwali everyone! This is the one time in the year that I REALLY miss being in India.

Well, there are reasons for a mother to have "mausi-like" instincts. Scientists have long talked about how "aunts" in elephant groups are helpful for the group as a whole, hence this is a trait that natural selection will preserve.

NPR on aunts here.
